Hello!
Welcome to my world and thanks for jumping in!
Earlier this year, I created a series of large abstract colourful watercolours. There were hints of figures, and an interest arose in rekindling some figuration from earlier in my career.
20 years ago, I created a series of paintings of Naked Dancing Women, but I put them down, because of the discomfort when anyone asked, ‘Who are they and what are they doing?’ I now know they were an expression of liberation and joy, around some dissolving of body shame going on at the time.
For the last six months I have been quite absorbed in getting my Naked Man project running, I’m drawing 100 Naked Men, as a response to discovering some conditioning around my gaze and what I learnt I should and should not look at.
As part of the Naked Man project, I have been looking more deeply at shame, and desires. Reflecting on the various forces at play within me. I wrote a chapter in a book titled Radical Freedom. Writing this chapter helped me join the dots on why I have many times wanted to paint naked figures, and the background discomfort I felt when I was asked, ‘Why do you have to paint them naked?’
As part of giving myself permission to explore new territories, and trying out new ideas, that are flowing, I am setting up the Shameless Experiment. This piece all feeds into my studio work. It’s tremendously exciting to now feel that I could paint anything I want...that everything is back on the table, and I no longer feel limited by my earlier conditioning about what I should or should not include.
